The Origin and Growth of Bluffton

Incorporated in 1852, the town of Bluffton originated on the bluffs above the May River. What started out as a small town consisting of one square mile with only 750 inhabitants has ballooned into a town encompassing 54 square miles and over 20,000 residents in 2019. The beauty and year-round warm climate of Bluffton draws thousands of people to the area, not only to live, but also to vacation.

Bluffton's Prime Location and Climate

Bluffton acts as a central hub between Hilton Head, Savannah, Beaufort, and Charleston, which means that in only around 40 minutes you can be in a thriving historical city such as Savannah, GA, or in 20 minutes be on the beac hes of Hilton Head. Route 278 cuts east to west through Bluffton taking you from Interstate 95 all the way out to Hilton Head Island; with the heart of Bluffton, Old Town Bluffton, being only 20 minutes off I-95. Temperatures range from 46F to 57.4F in January, the coldest month of the year. And 77.9F to 87.6F in July, the hottest month of the year.

Attractions and Amenities in Bluffton

Bluffton has many amenities and attractions to keep you busy whether you live here or are visiting. Open air shopping centers such as Tanger Outlets I & II and Buckwalter Place can satisfy any shopaholic, and people who enjoy beer, cider, or hard liquor will enjoy places such as the Southern Barrel Brewing Co, Burnt Church Distillery, and Bee Town Mead And Cider. Golf enthusiasts can enjoy the 20 golf courses in Bluffton alone with a total of 69 courses in a 20 mile radius. And of course Bluffton has food stores and super-stores such as Publix, Piggly Wiggly’s, Walmart, and Target.

Education Opportunities in Bluffton

Due to the massive population boom of the past two decades, the town has been building schools to keep pace. There are eight public elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools in the town. In addition there are 2 colleges: University of South Carolina Beaufort and the Technical college of the Lowcountry. These colleges each have around 2,000 students enrolled across a number of majors and associate programs.

Nature and Historical Sites in Bluffton

If you prefer being outside and enjoy hikes then the Buckwalter Place Greenway provides for a 1.4 mile hike to take-in the Lowcountry’s flora and fauna. Other great nature walks include the Victoria bluff heritage preserve and the New River Trail. History buffs will enjoy Old Town Bluffton where tours enable you to learn more about the town’s history. The Heyward House is an Antebellum home that was owned by a plantation owner in the Old Town district and has been turned into a museum, which provides tours of the facilities. And for those who enjoy the fresh produce from a farmer’s market, there is one held in the Old Town district from 12-5pm every Thursday.

Communities in Bluffton

Bluffton has many communities with homes ranging from 1 bed condos all the way up to mega-mansions. Each development has its own amenities and style of homes. If you are looking to live or invest in the area here are some communities you may want to consider.

Mill Creek at Cyprus Ridge®  is located just off of Okatie Highway and south of Sun City®. It includes amenities such as a pool, fitness center, playground, trails, tennis courts, and basketball courts. In Mill Creek there are townhomes and houses.

Pinecrest® has an 18 hole public golf course that can be seen when driving down Bluffton Parkway or past Bluffton High. The development also has swimming pools, a fitness center, and a playground right next to the basketball court.

Hampton Hall® is located at one of the 2 intersections of Bluffton Parkway and Buckwalter Parkway, across from Shell Hall®. This gated community has a number of amenities that include a fitness center, pool, and clubhouse. In addition, Hampton Hall® has a private golf course for club members.

The Crescent® is home to an Arnold Palmer Signature golf course. This gated community also has a pool and kiddie pool, tennis courts, a fitness center, and a covered pavilion for hosting events.
